Powered by Packard's big 384 cubic inch inline eight, the Sixth Series 1929 640 Custom Eight offered power, performance and prestige in the ultimate year of the Roaring Twenties. Today it is recognized as a Classic Car Club of America Full Classic, a modern measure of its stature among its contemporaries and one of the finest automobiles of its era. It received an AACA Senior National First Prize award in 1993, and remains outstanding in its presentation. The Packard 640 is the stylish, sporting, sleek image of the Jazz Age. Built on an impressive 140-inch wheelbase with a long, low hood over the big inline eight-cylinder engine, the 640 Custom Eight exuded Roaring Twenties presence; exemplified on this 1929 840 Custom Eight Runabout with its cinnamon hood and fenders, gray-green body sides, dark caramel leather, rakish tan cloth top, small Pilot-Ray driving lights, chrome wire wheels, dual enclosed sidemounts, wide whitewall tires, rumbleseat, golf bag door, cowllights, driver's side spotlight, luggage rack, generous windwings, radiator stoneguard and donut chaser radiator mascot. The coachwork is accented with a silver painted beltline outlined with red pinstripes original appearance, it was featured at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance recently and is still a stunning, beautiful automobile ready to be shown, but better to be driven with style and panache.
